ANNOTATION

These non-fictional memories only superficially concern the history of world rocket engineering and the development of complex engineering, and even then, from the point of view of an ordinary and not too disciplined soldier. However, it is possible to touch the minds of readers who have not woken up in this direction and turn them to a more thorough study of the history of our country and cosmonautics in particular. And this period was absolutely unique in the history of the USSR, and of all mankind on Earth.

FROM THE AUTHOR

I’ll make a reservation right away. I have never been a recruited counterintelligence agent or a saboteur, and I have never been a negative hero of boring Soviet reality. Rather the opposite. As a simple boy from a working-class family that barely made ends meet (my father was an electrician, my mother was a barmaid), I tried to get out of the gray reality by unknown ways of developing a person who yearned for a beautiful life and adapting it to the real truth of life. Often, such unauthorized studies of the way of life of the people and their superiors imperceptibly crossed the line of the law, which was prescribed for that Time. The police and the KGB sometimes loomed on the left shoulder. However, nothing happened. But my stories about my, for example, service in the army at the Baikonur cosmodrome shock listeners, and some ask that I write it all down for re-reading. And so I broke down… So, as fellow countryman Gagarin said: let’s Go…

My honest army stories. COLOGNE

As I remember (from the mess), I shudder (ugh-ugh-ugh).

All recruits in the hands of bags with different garments on all occasions. These clothes will be taken away from us by those who have served and are going home (and in General, everything will be taken away from us, even a new uniform along with boots, so that we will look like seasoned soldiers). Each recruit has a week’s supply of food. This was very useful, because we were driven for a long time, but stopped in the middle of the desert for a few days. Each recruit had several bottles of Cologne in their kit to save a person after shaving… well, the vodka is hidden under the arm…

We were loaded into Pullman cars for transporting coal and cattle and sent home… Vodka immediately began to drink, so that no one stole in their sleep… the cars stopped in the Karakum desert, as we later learned… The sun, the sand, the jerboa… we didn’t know where they were taking us, or we would have screamed, «bring us back»… or rather, we would have run away…

They stood for a WEEK… As it turned out later, where we were being taken (site 41 polygon #5 of the Ministry of defense of the USSR), Marshal NEDELIN had just died from an explosion at the launch of the R-16 Intercontinental missile, and with him 250 more service members.

(According to official data, almost 2 times less. People 100 simply not found). Mitrofan Ivanovich Nedelin was found with a medal on his chest and immured in the Kremlin wall, while the rest were taken to site 13 (the local cemetery)…

THE DISASTER OF MARSHAL NEDELIN

This disaster at the Baikonur cosmodrome on October 24, 1960 was called the «Marshal Nedelin Disaster"in the West. About half an hour before the launch of the rocket, someone mistakenly started the engine of the second stage of the R-16. a Powerful flame from the rocket nozzles destroyed the tanks of the first stage. They exploded, and the rocket fuel turned into an avalanche of fire rushing hundreds of meters. At this time, people were working both on and around the rocket, and Marshal Nedelin of the rocket forces was sitting near the rocket, because he did not agree to go into hiding. «I believe in Soviet technology.».. So he wanted to make the maintenance staff fearless dangerous presence near a fueled rocket.

«A roaring stream of fire from the activated second stage fell from above on the refueled first stage. The first to burn were all those who were on the multi-storey pre-launch service masts. Seconds later, the first stage flared up. The explosion spilled burning components a hundred meters away. For all who were near the rocket, death was terrible, but quick. They only had time to experience the horror of what had happened for a few seconds. The poisonous fumes and firestorm quickly rendered them unconscious. More terrible were the torments of those who were away from the Marshal. They had time to realize that there was a disaster, and ran. Burning components, spilling over the concrete, overtook the runners. Their clothes caught fire. People flared up with torches as they ran, fell and burned out in agony, suffocating from the poisonous and hot fumes of nitrogen oxides and dimethylhydrazine… A terrible picture was revealed to the fire crews, ambulance crews, and all those who rushed to help. Among those who managed to run away from the rocket, there were still alive. They were immediately taken to the hospital. Most of the dead were unrecognizable. The corpses were stored in a specially designated barrack for identification. Arkady Ostashev, who arrived the day after the crash, spent 14 hours in the barracks trying to identify his brother Yevgeny. Nedelin was identified by the preserved gold Star medal. Konoplev’s body was identified by its size. He was taller than anyone else on the platform…

Smoking saved the lives of Yangel, Iosifyan, and everyone who kept them company in the Smoking room, which was a safe distance from the start… Yangel was an eye-witness to the tragedy from beginning to end.

(http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/ _ (1960))

«This was a gross violation of safety regulations in preparation for the launch of missiles. The irrepressible desire to have time to launch a rocket that was not fully prepared for the upcoming holiday, the anniversary of the great October socialist revolution, led to the heaviest tragedy, unpunished and hidden from the Soviet people.

The disaster was classified, and was first mentioned in the Soviet media only in 1989». (http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/ _ (1960))

IN THE MEANTIME

But we, in our temporary shelter, in the pulmans, knew nothing… I wanted to eat and drink… the provisions, however, ran out… Tiny kangaroos that had come out of nowhere to stare at the strangers mocked us, giggling strangely. We were excited about this strange hangover in the heat. But someone reassured that this is not «delirium tremens», but normal white-tailed jerboa. And then, having calmed down, one conscript began to beg for Cologne from everyone… and he drank to try out the real devils, not the pathetic fake desert mirages… It was called eau de COLOGNE… We were surprised by his abnormal orientation, and then caught ourselves and finished the rest. And I have at night someone even drank liquid soap. We figured it out from the bubbles this morning. He this fauna in the face of jerboa all the flora spoiled in the face of camel thorns. And we, the spontaneous explorers of the desert surroundings, had to look suspiciously at each other in order not to step on the muck…:)

Well, when we really became soldiers on this 41 SITE (Where the entire Kara-Kum desert was dotted with «sites», i.e. separate military units with their own ballistic missile very long-range sight… I will not say who we were aiming at — this is a military secret, for which they can put and torture to death, like my grandfather, a pole, together with Vavilov in 1937 in «the Gestapo» dungeons of the city of Saratov, for not giving out, apparently, the secret of wheat selection to the Prosecutor Lysenko (a bitter joke) … that’s when we discovered that there are no shops on the site, and even more so with vodka… There were only cupboards with shaving perfumes… that is, the different colognes and lavender water… And we have already learned how to use them in pulmans…

And once I did not calculate the impact of this triple Cologne snake on a young body that was not kissed… Tenacious Cerberus caught me right on the day of the air force, at the moment of my highest enthusiasm for Soviet missile technology, and P16 ballistic missiles in particular… They lowered my enthusiasm, but found fault with the fact that I filled my body with Cologne, and took me to the guardhouse…

HERE IS THE FIRST PRISON

This little prison was already overflowing with violators of the correct wearing of uniform. I fell asleep from boredom and vomited. I woke up to the noise and fight of these violators for the right to breathe fresh air through the observation window in the armored door. The sentry and the chief came to the noise, all were taken out into the desert, and I was given a floor rag. I wiped everything in the lock-up and smeared it all over the guardhouse… At the entrance to the guardhouse, evil spirits threw the daredevils back. That’s how the prisoners then sat near this very guardhouse until morning, waiting for the weakening of the perfume magic. But in vain — it stank for a week, or even longer. I didn’t go sniffing, but those who were caught later told me about it. And in the morning, the chief of the rear, a Lieutenant Colonel with the funny name Caterpillar, came to see who was caught.

«For what?»«what is it?» he asked as he passed me.

I (hands at the seams): — Violation of the form of clothing.

— Yes? I heard that that there was something behind the collar… and he passed the back of his hand under his throat.

Intuition pushed me desperately to turn to luck:

— Comrade Colonel (flattering promotion)! Bail me out!!! I promise not to drink any more alcohol

The Colonel was taken aback by this impudence, and then suddenly said to the chief::

— Let go.

...and I was released… and the boys were left to impregnate the correct smell of green uniforms. It’s disgusting, of course, and so I’m sorry for the sophistication in words. Corny is not written at all. Shamefully.

— Were there any anecdotal cases in the history of the cosmodrome?

— Any number. Say that. For 1957, Korolev’s assistant ordered a tank of alcohol-12 tons for washing systems and so on. And only 7 tons were spent. What to do? After all, they knew that the state security service of the USSR will allocate no more than «expense» for the next year. The assistant called a bulldozer, dug a hole near the tank and poured the remaining alcohol into it. Covered with sand. But someone got wind of it, scraped away the sand… they used soldiers ' kettles to draw alcohol So at the landfill, where prohibition reigned, there was a drink. However, the order was brought quickly-the remnants of alcohol simply burned. And Sergei Pavlovich then sighed for a long time: «what a shame, such good and in the land!»

http://soviet-life.narod.ru/Page.chronicles/Baykanyr.html SECRETS of BAIKONUR

And so we slowly began to understand, however, where we got to serve the Motherland.

It turns out

«The Baikonur cosmodrome became the first test site in the world from which the first artificial earth satellite was launched, from here for the first time a man went to explore the space expanses. Kazakhstan’s cosmodrome was launched a series of manned spacecraft series Vostok, Voskhod, Soyuz, space station series «salute», «Mir», the system reusable «Energy» — «Buran», interplanetary spacecraft, satellites. In total, more than 1,200 launches of space rockets and about 2,000 launches of Intercontinental ballistic missiles were carried out from the launch pads of the cosmodrome. About one and a half thousand spacecraft for military, scientific, and national economic purposes, as well as commercial satellites, have been launched into various orbits.

In 2008, Russia carried out 27 launch vehicles, while taking the first place in the world in the number of launches and surpassing its own figure for 2007. 19 launches out of 27 were made from the Baikonur cosmodrome. The remaining eight were made from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region (6 launches), the Yasny launch base in the Orenburg region (1 launch), and the Kapustin Yar test site in the Astrakhan region (1 launch).

Baikonur is one of three cosmodromes in the world, which, along with the Cape Canaveral cosmodromes (in the United States) and Jiuquan (in China), is designed to launch vehicles with astronauts on Board.»

«The very first missile that was tested at the site was the R-7 Intercontinental ballistic missile developed by S. p. Korolev. By the beginning of flight tests of the R-7 on the vast territory of the polygon, along the flight routes and on the fields of falling head parts, the measuring complex of the polygon was formed. On may 15, 1957, the first launch of the R-7 rocket took place. On October 4, 1957, the first artificial earth satellite was put into orbit by the same rocket. On April 12, 1961, the combat crew of the test site, together with representatives of industrial enterprises, prepared and launched the Vostok spacecraft with the first cosmonaut of the Earth, Yuri Gagarin, on Board.

THE SELLER AIR

There is such a story in the Soviet science fiction writer Alexander Belyaev. Yes, there’s a movie out. There one figure (in the evil foreign world, of course), built a plant for pumping and liquefying air. He sucked out almost all the air on our planet and then sold it to people in balloons to breathe. This is fantastic, I thought earlier. Fuck that! We, young recruits of the Baikonur cosmodrome, were driven to clean up garbage from some huge underground plant to suck out the air that was already missing in the lungs with a powerful, several-story «ASTHMA 7» turbine (my name). The air was compressed, became liquid, and divided into fractions of nitrogen and oxygen. Oxygen was pumped out to burn kerosene in the nozzle of rockets in the space void, and nitrogen was released to us to breathe. Gorenje And we began to think wrongly in the direction of escape from here. In the meantime, we couldn’t get away, so we ate homemade ice cream. They bought condensed milk in a zany stall for the entire monthly salary (3 rubles 70 kopecks), diluted it with water and put the pan on a tank with liquid oxygen covered with a thick layer of snow. I didn’t figure it out. I didn’t have enough oxygen in my gyrus for that. But ice cream cheered up the scheme of retraining yourself from an underground janitor to an electrician, or, if you’re lucky, a cook. I’d like to get away from here.

«The nitrogen-oxygen plant, which produces 6 tons of liquid oxygen per hour and 7.2 tons per hour of liquid nitrogen, stops working after each failure in the supply voltage. Emergency transients cause equipment failures. The next start-up of the equipment and entering the production of liquid gases requires 12 hours for technological reasons. Energy-related problems can be listed for hours.»http://www.vestnik.com/issues/97/0930/win/snitkov.htm

JUST THINK ABOUT IT

«6 tons of liquid oxygen per hour. Now type «Oxygen plant» in the search and you will see factories in Volgograd, Samara, Krasnodar, Omsk, Khabarovsk, Yekaterinburg, Voronezh and Balashikha… you can’t count them all. Now multiply these installations by the United States, China, and other countries, and then multiply all this by the number of liquid-fueled missiles launched…!!! Will the foliage of the entire planet keep up with the restoration of this oxygen consumption, moreover, with the merciless destruction of this foliage on our part? So the time is not far off when we will buy oxygen cylinders and wear them on our belts, like soldiers ' water flasks on Baikonur (a mandatory form of clothing)!!! I’m fine. I will add how little air remains. And I advise you to look at energy-intensive flasks now!!!

REFERENCE

Once there was a question of choosing a vast sparsely populated area, the land of which was little used in agricultural production and near which there would be some railway line. This area was found in Kazakhstan to the East of the Aral sea. It was a semi-desert. HUNGRY STEPPE. The first builders arrived at the tyura-Tam station on January 12, 1955. Construction of the «Polygon N5» of the Ministry of defense of the USSR began. The polygon was created with incredible speed. Suffice it to say that just to create a channel that diverts the flames during the launch of the P-7, it took to remove one million cubic meters of soil. Sharply continental climate: hot summers (more than 40° C) and cold winters (below-30° C) — increased all the difficulties. Military builders lived and worked in the most difficult conditions… But soon «Polygon N5» turned into the Baikonur cosmodrome, because if a satellite was launched, then there must be a cosmodrome…

(http://www.buran.ru/htm/baykonur.htm)

But the main value of the spaceport is people. The following facts testify to the high scientific and intellectual potential: several hundred research works have been performed, thousands of research proposals have been implemented, several dozen inventions have been introduced, and dozens of testers have defended their dissertations for a scientific degree. Hundreds of military personnel and civilian personnel of the cosmodrome were awarded state awards. (http://www.buran.ru/htm/baykonur.htm)

However, I am a small person, so I put what I found on the Internet for such people…

(http://www.molomo.ru/myth/baikonur.html)

«After all, there is fierce competition in the field of space technologies, so all the secrets will not be revealed. It is unlikely that the secret of the death of tens and hundreds of conscripts who, by their own carelessness (?) inhaled poisonous paint (and maybe something else) — this is not necessary for anyone. So the spaceport will keep its secrets for a long time.» (http://www.molomo.ru/myth/baikonur.html)

SENTRY

It is the Uzbeks who like to stand at the post with a machine gun. Because it is better to be idle on duty than to dig trenches. And saratovtsa on a post three to tow it is necessary. And at night they fell asleep on the post. Especially me. In fact, I only stood once during the entire «war», but rather slept. The soldier is asleep, but the service is going on, «we said. Sometimes, I would sleep for a whole day on duty underground near the nozzle of the K-75 rocket and Wake up with a nail on this nozzle and put a dash, like Robinson on a desert island. De say, died the day.

In the barracks, there was a tradition: when everyone in their beds was quiet at night, someone would say loudly: THE DAY has PASSED. Well, the soldiers from under the blankets answered in a chorus and loudly: well, FUCK HIM. Only then did they fall asleep soundly… And from the Chinese word HU don’t turn away. The Chinese ek centuries ago this health exhalation noticed. Since then, they are very prolific and succeed in important details. We picked up on that word, too. In the army, it is particularly firmly stuck. And now it helps us build and live. There’s a spaceport was built to the Americans on jealousy. And all because they did not have time to intercept this word in their dictionary in time. So they began to lag behind in alien creativity… …

N-Yes! So what am I talking about?..

Oh, Yes!!! Once I unsuccessfully cross the parade ground with a cat running after me (then I will tell you about it separately), and on the parade ground, the poor fellows who are on combat duty are instructed. And one soldier was missing. They grabbed me and gave me a machine gun. Without instruction. And that I was taking the cat to eat in the officers ’mess (you can’t drag it to the soldiers’ mess on the leash) was not taken into account. That’s how I ended up in the outfit, or whatever it is. They took the three of us (me, a gunpowder-sniffing sucker, Sergeant Tyurin, a second-year employee, and an old man-khatabych, who was about to be released home, so he already gave a fuck about this service) far into the desert and were charged with guarding a grimly covered truck from an attack by jerboa. But they were not visible. But the scorpions and phalanxes were just hanging around. Even in the tent under the blanket climbed. Shooting back at them was problematic. We fought off the scorpions with the butt. By nightfall, we were tired. The plant and animal world was not particularly aggressive to the spaceport, but the presence of scorpions phalanges, poisonous snakes and karakurts did not cause anyone’s delight.

The Sergeant and Hottabych went to sleep in the tent, and I was put on duty. Ah I the sky from boredom, to not fall asleep, viewed. I remembered some poems corresponding to this situation:

I’m alone at the intersection.

The night is silent and sad.

Beneath me, the stones are hard,

Above me, the moon is pale.

I stand in anguish submissive

And I’m waiting for terrible phenomena,

I’m waiting for the Raven to call out.,

Foretelling trouble.

War. Poems: publication of the Fatherland magazine, 1915.

And, suddenly, I see suspicious alien activity in the night sky. At first, the comets were intimidated, and then, emboldened, they began to dance on the plates and touch the truck with rays. I woke Tyurin and reported the situation. De, they say, in my opinion, we do not brush off the green with machine guns.

«Don’t be wise,» Tyurin said, but just in case he woke up Khatabych to replace me. With a grunt, he moved from the cot to the dirty wheel of the grim object and, hugging the machine, immediately fell asleep. We were in the tent earlier. When the inspector arrived, we did not hear. We woke up when the lights of a car were moving away in the dead of night. Sergeant Tyurin became alarmed and began searching for automatic weapons. But there were none. Was only Hatabich sleeping cuddled up with a gun as with a woman. We pushed it and began to take away the machine gun to shoot the hemorrhoids that were receding. Khatabych was afraid (you can’t see his will for a century) and steadfastly held on to the imputed weapon. So we missed the opportunity to shoot a lot of hunting before a long prison sentence.

And now the hemorrhoids are back with a replacement. We were tied up and thrown into a truck. Those who will remain to look out for the white tails of invisible jerboa, we did not have time to tell what celestial phenomena lie in wait for them here. We sat in the guardhouse for 10 days in suspense. Cologne smelled only slightly and did not «stick» at all. So it was dreary. Especially Hottabych, who was determined to be demobilized.

During the interrogation, it turned out that I was on duty for the first time and did not pass the instructions because of the cat. Where did he go, anyway? It’s called cross-examination. they me, and I their. I wanted to take it with me to disbat. Perhaps they were afraid to report this emergency to Moscow and let me and Tyurin serve further. And the old man-Hottabych was discharged home last. But he was still glad that he got off cheap.
