Chapter I: Peter Visits the Nursery

All children grow up — except one. His name is Peter Pan.

Wendy knew she would grow up when she was just two years old. One day, she was playing in the garden. She picked a flower and ran to her mother. Mrs. Darling looked at her and said, «Oh, why can’t you stay like this forever?» After that, Wendy understood she couldn’t stay little.

The Darling family lived at Number 14. Before Wendy was born, her mother, Mrs. Darling, was the most important person in the house. Mrs. Darling was very beautiful. She had a sweet smile and a special kiss on her lips. Wendy could see the kiss, but no one could ever catch it.

Mr. Darling, Wendy’s father, loved Mrs. Darling very much. Many men wanted to marry her, but Mr. Darling was clever. He arrived at her house before the others and asked her first. She said yes, and they got married.

After their wedding, Mrs. Darling started drawing pictures of babies. Soon, they had three children: Wendy, John, and Michael.

When Wendy was born, Mr. Darling worried about money. He sat on the bed with Mrs. Darling and a piece of paper. He added numbers and said, «Can we afford to keep her?»

Mrs. Darling looked at him and said, «Of course we can, George!»

When John and Michael were born, it was the same. Mr. Darling worried, but in the end, they kept all three children.

The family didn’t have much money, so they couldn’t hire a regular nurse. Instead, their nurse was a big dog named Nana. Nana was very good at taking care of the children. She gave them baths, stayed by their beds at night, and walked them to school. Everyone loved Nana — except Mr. Darling. He worried that the neighbors might think it was strange to have a dog for a nurse.

Mrs. Darling loved her children very much. Every night, after they were asleep, she sat by their beds and tidied up their dreams. She looked at the thoughts in their heads, just like tidying up a messy drawer.

One night, she found a strange name in their dreams: Peter.

«Who is Peter?» she asked Wendy.

«He’s Peter Pan,» Wendy said. «He’s a boy who never grows up.»

Mrs. Darling thought Peter was just a story. But Wendy said, «No, he’s real. He comes to the nursery at night. He sits on my bed and plays music on his pipes.»

Mrs. Darling didn’t believe it at first. But one morning, she found leaves on the nursery floor. They were strange leaves — not from any tree in England.

One evening, after the children were asleep, Mrs. Darling stayed in the nursery. Nana had the night off. Mrs. Darling sat by the fire, sewing. The room was quiet, with only the soft glow of the night-lights.

As she sat, she began to feel sleepy. Her head nodded, and soon she was dreaming.

In her dream, she saw the Neverland, a magical place with islands, pirates, and fairies. Suddenly, the dream changed. She saw a boy breaking through the dream and into the nursery.

Mrs. Darling woke up. The window had blown open. A boy was standing in the middle of the room!

He was small, about the size of Wendy. His clothes were made of leaves, and his smile was bright. A tiny light flew around him like a living star.

Mrs. Darling knew at once: this was Peter Pan.

When he saw she was a grown-up, he gnashed his little teeth at her.

Chapter II: The Shadow

Mrs. Darling screamed. At that moment, the door opened, and Nana, the family’s dog, ran in. Nana growled and jumped at the boy. He quickly leapt out of the window and disappeared into the night.

Mrs. Darling gasped, thinking he had fallen. She hurried outside to look for him, but there was no sign of his body on the ground. Looking up, she saw only a shooting star in the dark sky.

When she returned to the nursery, she found Nana holding something in her mouth — it was the boy’s shadow! The boy had escaped, but Nana had closed the window just in time to trap the shadow inside.

«What is this?» Mrs. Darling wondered, taking the shadow from Nana. She examined it closely, but it looked like an ordinary shadow.

Nana thought the boy might come back for it. She wanted to hang the shadow near the window so he could find it easily without waking the children. However, Mrs. Darling decided against it. «It will look like laundry,» she thought, «and that will make the house look untidy.»

Instead, Mrs. Darling folded the shadow neatly and placed it in a drawer. She wanted to tell Mr. Darling about it, but he was busy counting coats for the children with a towel around his head, trying to think clearly. «If I tell him now,» she thought, «he will just blame Nana.»

A week later, on a Friday night, the Darlings were getting ready for a dinner party. Mrs. Darling often said afterward, «I should have been more careful — it was a Friday.»

The children were lively that evening. Michael, the youngest, refused to take his bath. «I won’t go to bed!» he shouted. «It’s not bedtime yet, Nana! I don’t love you anymore!»

Mrs. Darling entered the room in her lovely white evening dress. The children loved seeing her dressed up, and she always wore a necklace and bracelet they admired. She smiled and calmed Michael, gently guiding him to the bath.

John and Wendy, the older children, were playing pretend. John said, «Mrs. Darling, I am happy to tell you that you are now a mother!» Wendy laughed and danced around, pretending to be a happy mother.

While the children were playing, Mr. Darling stormed into the nursery. He was holding his tie and looking frustrated. «This tie won’t tie!» he shouted. «I’ve tied it around the bedpost twenty times, but it refuses to go around my neck

Mrs. Darling smiled calmly. «Let me try, dear.» She tied the tie perfectly, and Mr. Darling felt better. «Thank you,» he said, forgetting his anger. Soon he was laughing and playing with the children, carrying Michael on his back.

But the happy moment didn’t last. Nana accidentally bumped into Mr. Darling, and her fur got on his new trousers. «These are my first trousers with braid on them!» he said, trying not to cry.

«It’s all Nana’s fault,» he grumbled. «A dog shouldn’t be a nurse.»

«George,» Mrs. Darling replied gently, «Nana is wonderful with the children.»

But Mr. Darling didn’t listen. He decided Nana should sleep in the yard that night. He dragged her outside, even though the children cried and begged him to stop. Nana barked sadly, but she could not change his mind.

That night, after putting the children to bed, Mrs. Darling felt uneasy. She lit their nightlights and went to the window. Outside, the stars seemed to be watching the house. «I wish we weren’t going out tonight,» she whispered.

«Are we safe, Mother?» little Michael asked sleepily.

«Yes, darling,» she said softly. «The nightlights will keep you safe.»

She kissed each child and sang them to sleep. Michael hugged her tightly and said, «I’m glad you’re my mother.»

With these words, the Darlings left for the party. The stars twinkled above, curious about what might happen next. Little did they know, this was no ordinary night. Something magical — and dangerous — was about to begin.

1. What did Mrs. Darling see in the nursery, and how did Nana react?

2. What did Nana find, and why was it special?

3. Why didn’t Mrs. Darling hang the shadow by the window, and where did she put it instead?

4. Why was Mr. Darling upset, and how did Mrs. Darling help him?

5. Why did Mrs. Darling feel worried before the party, and what did Michael ask her?

Chapter III: Come Away, Come Away!

When Mr. and Mrs. Darling left the house, the small nightlights near the children’s beds stayed on for a while. They were nice little lights, but soon they blinked, yawned, and went out.

Suddenly, a bright light appeared in the room. It wasn’t a regular light. It moved fast, opening drawers, looking for something. When it stopped for a moment, you could see it wasn’t a light at all. It was a tiny fairy, no bigger than your hand. Her name was Tinker Bell. She wore a dress made from leaves, and she looked very pretty.

Then, the window flew open, and Peter Pan came into the room. He had carried Tinker Bell part of the way, so his hand was covered in fairy dust.

«Tinker Bell,» Peter whispered, «where are you?»

Tink, as Peter called her, was inside a jug. She liked it there — it was her first time in one.

«Oh, come out, Tink! Do you know where my shadow is?»

Tinker Bell made a sound like tiny bells. That’s how fairies talk. Peter understood her and went straight to the big chest of drawers. He opened them quickly, throwing clothes on the floor, and found his shadow.

Peter tried to stick his shadow back on. He used soap from the bathroom, but it didn’t work. He sat on the floor and cried.

Wendy woke up and saw him. She wasn’t scared. She was curious.

«Boy,» she asked, «why are you crying?»

Peter stood up and bowed like a gentleman. Wendy smiled and bowed back from her bed.

«What’s your name?» he asked.

«I’m Wendy Moira Angela Darling,» she said proudly. «What’s yours?»

«Peter Pan.»

Wendy thought his name was quite short. «Is that all?»

«Yes!» Peter said sharply.

Wendy felt sorry for him. «Where do you live?»

«Second star to the right, and straight on till morning,» Peter replied.

«What a funny address

«It’s not funny,» Peter said, looking a little upset.

Wendy tried to cheer him up. «Don’t you get letters there?»

«I don’t get letters.»

«But your mother gets letters?»

«I don’t have a mother,» Peter said. He didn’t have a mother, and he didn’t want one at all.

Wendy felt sad for him. «Oh, Peter, that’s so terrible!»

«I wasn’t crying about that!» Peter said. «I was crying because my shadow won’t stick.»

Wendy saw the shadow on the floor. «It needs to be sewn on,» she said.

«What’s «sewn’?» Peter asked.

Wendy laughed a little. «I’ll sew it for you!»

She got her needle and thread. «This might hurt a bit,» she warned.

«I won’t cry,» Peter said bravely. He clenched his teeth as Wendy sewed the shadow to his foot.

When it was done, Peter jumped up, full of joy. «Oh, how clever I am!» he shouted.

Wendy frowned. «Clever? I’m the one who sewed it!»

Peter didn’t care. «You helped a little,» he said.

This made Wendy upset. She went back to bed and hid under the blankets.

«Wendy,» Peter said softly, «don’t be mad. I can’t stop being happy when I’m proud of myself. But listen, Wendy, one girl is more helpful than twenty boys.»

Wendy peeked out. «Do you really think so?»

«Yes, I do!» Peter said.

Wendy smiled and sat next to him again. She offered him a kiss.

«What’s a kiss?» Peter asked.

Wendy, surprised, gave him a thimble instead. Peter thought it was a real kiss and handed her an acorn button as his kiss. Wendy decided to keep it on a chain around her neck.

«Where do you live now?» Wendy asked.

«With the Lost Boys,» Peter said. «They are boys who fell out of their prams when their nannies weren’t looking. No one claimed them, so they came to Neverland. I’m their leader.»

«Are there any girls?» Wendy asked.

«No,» Peter said. «Girls are too smart to fall out of their prams.»

Wendy was pleased. «You talk so nicely about girls,» she said.

Peter suddenly remembered why he came. «Wendy, do you know stories?»

«Oh yes,» Wendy said. «Lots of them!»

Peter’s eyes lit up. «Come with me to tell stories to the Lost Boys!»

«Oh, I can’t,» Wendy said. «I can’t leave my mother. And I don’t know how to fly!»

«I’ll teach you,» Peter said. «We’ll fly together, see mermaids, and have adventures!»

«Mermaids?» Wendy asked. «With tails?»

«Yes, long tails!» Peter said.

Wendy was tempted. Peter took her hand and smiled. «Come away with me, Wendy,» he said softly.

Just then, John and Michael woke up. «What’s going on?» John asked.

«We’re going to Neverland!» Peter said.

«Can we come too?» Michael asked excitedly.

«Of course!» Peter said.

Peter taught them all how to fly. «Just think happy thoughts,» he said. «And sprinkle a little fairy dust!»

Soon, they were flying around the nursery. «Come on!» Peter shouted. «To the stars!»

And out the window they flew, into the night sky, heading for Neverland.

Who is Tinker Bell, and what does she look like?

Why was Peter Pan crying when Wendy woke up?

What did Wendy do to help Peter with his shadow?

How do Peter, Wendy, John, and Michael learn to fly?

Why does Peter want Wendy to come to Neverland? What does he promise her?

Chapter IV: The Flight

«Second to the right, and straight on till morning!» Peter said. That was how to find Neverland. But even birds with maps couldn’t find it using these directions. Peter just said whatever came to his mind.

At first, Wendy, John, and Michael trusted him completely. Flying was so much fun that they wasted time circling church towers and tall trees. John and Michael even raced, laughing as they zoomed through the air.

«We are flying!» Michael shouted.

«Much better than just flying around the room!» John added.

But soon, they realized they had been flying for a long time. Wendy frowned. «How long have we been flying, John?»

«Maybe it’s our second night over the sea,» John guessed.

The children felt cold at times, then warm again. Sometimes they were hungry. Peter had a strange way of feeding them. He chased birds carrying food, took the food, and the birds chased him to take it back. It turned into a funny game, and they all laughed. But Wendy thought, This isn’t a proper way to eat!

When they got sleepy, things became dangerous. As soon as they fell asleep, they started dropping from the sky.

«Save him, Peter!» Wendy cried one time when Michael fell.

Peter laughed and caught Michael just before he hit the water. «That was close!» Peter said with a grin. But he always waited until the very last moment to save them.

Peter could float while sleeping. «How does he do that?» John asked.

«He’s so light, the wind carries him,» Wendy whispered.

When Peter wasn’t showing them how to fly, he liked to show off. He flew close to the water and touched shark fins as if they were railings on a fence.

«Stop showing off, Peter,» John grumbled.

«Be nice to him!» Wendy told her brothers. «What would we do if he left us?»

«We’d just fly back home,» Michael said confidently.

«But how?» Wendy asked. «We don’t know how to stop flying!»

Peter hadn’t taught them how to stop yet. John thought about flying around the world until they reached their window again.

As they flew, they bumped into clouds and got scrapes. «If Nana were here,» Wendy said, «she’d put bandages on all of us!»

Sometimes Peter flew far ahead, leaving them alone. He came back laughing about adventures he had with stars or mermaids, but he never explained fully.

Wendy was worried. «What if Peter forgets us?» she said.

Once, Peter flew past them and didn’t seem to recognize them. «Peter, it’s me, Wendy!» she cried.

«Oh, right. Sorry!» Peter said, embarrassed. «Just remind me if I forget, okay?»

The children were tired, but Peter had endless energy. He taught them how to lie flat on the wind and sleep safely. Still, Peter’s calls of «Let’s go!» woke them up every time.

Finally, after many days, Peter pointed. «There it is. Neverland!»

«Where?» asked Wendy, standing on tiptoes in the air.

«Where the golden arrows are pointing,» Peter said. The sun’s rays seemed to point toward an island below.

The children cheered. They saw the lagoon, turtles on the beach, and a wolf with her cubs. «Look, it’s just like we imagined!» they cried.

But as they got closer, the island turned dark and scary. Shadows moved in the trees, and strange sounds came from the forest.

Peter stopped and listened. «Do you want tea first or an adventure?» he asked.

«Tea!» Wendy said quickly.

«Adventure!» John replied, trying to be brave.

«There’s a pirate down there,» Peter whispered. «He’s asleep. Shall we wake him and fight?»

John hesitated. «What if he wakes up angry?»

«I always wake them before fighting,» Peter said proudly. «It’s more fun that way.»

The children asked about the pirates. «Who’s their captain?» John asked.

«Hook,» Peter said darkly.

«Captain Hook?» Wendy whispered.

«Yes,» Peter said. His eyes sparkled, and his voice became serious. «If we meet him, leave him to me.»

They flew lower. Suddenly, a loud BOOM shook the air. «What was that?» Michael cried.

«The pirates are shooting at us!» Peter shouted.

The children scattered. Wendy was blown upwards with only Tinker Bell for company. But Tinker Bell wasn’t friendly. She flew around Wendy, pretending to help, but she was full of jealousy.

«Follow me,» Tink’s tiny light seemed to say.

Wendy followed, calling for Peter, John, and Michael. But no one answered. Wendy didn’t know Tinker Bell was leading her into danger.

How do Peter, Wendy, John, and Michael find food while flying to Neverland? Do you think this is a good way to eat? Why or why not?

What happens when the children get sleepy while flying? How does Peter help them?

Why does Peter forget Wendy, John, and Michael sometimes? How do they remind him?

What do the children see when they first arrive near Neverland? How does the island change as they get closer?

Why is Tinker Bell not friendly to Wendy, and where does she lead Wendy at the end?

Chapter V: The Island Comes to Life

When Peter Pan comes back to the island, everything wakes up. While he’s away, the Neverland is quiet. The fairies sleep longer, the animals take care of their babies, and the pirates and Lost Boys only make faces at each other. But when Peter is near, the whole island is full of energy.

Tonight, the island is busy. The Lost Boys are looking for Peter, the pirates are hunting the boys, the redskins are chasing the pirates, and the animals are after the redskins. They all move in circles, never meeting because they move at the same speed.

The Lost Boys are not thinking about fighting tonight. They are eager to see Peter. There are six boys, counting the twins as two. Let’s watch them quietly as they move through the forest.

The boys wear bear-skin clothes they made themselves. They are round and fluffy, and when they fall, they roll like balls. They walk carefully and hold daggers in their hands.

First comes Tootles, the bravest but also the unluckiest boy. He often misses the big adventures. If he goes to collect wood, something exciting happens while he’s gone. This makes him sad, but it also makes him kind. Poor Tootles doesn’t know that Tinker Bell is looking for trouble tonight and may trick him.

Next is Nibs, cheerful and bold. Slightly comes after him, always whistling tunes he makes up. Slightly thinks he remembers life before the island, so he acts like he knows everything.

Then comes Curly, who is always in trouble. When Peter asks, «Who did this?» Curly steps forward automatically, guilty or not.

Finally, there are the Twins. No one can tell them apart. Even Peter doesn’t understand what twins are, so they stay close together and try not to cause confusion.

After the boys, the pirates march through the woods. You can hear their scary song before you see them:

«Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life,

A treasure chest and sword so bright!»

The pirates are a frightening crew. Cecco, the handsome Italian, listens for danger. Bill Jukes has tattoos all over his body. Smee, the friendly pirate, has funny names for his weapons. But the most terrifying is their captain, James Hook.

Hook rides in a cart pushed by his men. He is tall and pale, with black curly hair and cold blue eyes. His iron hook replaces his right hand. He is polite but deadly. When he uses his hook, his eyes glow red. Hook’s biggest fear is the crocodile that follows him everywhere. The crocodile once ate Hook’s hand and now wants the rest of him.

Next come the redskins, moving quietly through the forest. They are strong and painted with bright colors. At the front is Great Big Little Panther, carrying many trophies from past battles. At the back is Tiger Lily, their princess. She is proud and beautiful, leading her people with courage.

The animals are hungry tonight. Lions, tigers, and bears roam the island, looking for their next meal. At the end of the line comes the crocodile, moving silently. She is searching for her favorite snack — Hook.

The boys stop running and lie down near their secret home. «I wish Peter would come back,» they say nervously. Even Slightly, who always boasts, whispers, «I’m not scared of pirates, but I still want Peter to return.»

They hear a noise in the distance: the pirates’ song. In a flash, the boys disappear. They jump into tree holes that lead to their underground home.

The pirates arrive and find Nibs running through the woods. Starkey raises his pistol, but Hook grabs his arm. «Do you want to bring the redskins here with the noise?» Hook growls.

Smee asks, «Shall I catch him with Johnny Corkscrew?» (Johnny Corkscrew is Smee’s name for his knife.)

«Not yet,» Hook says. «I want all seven boys. Spread out and search!»

Soon, only Hook and Smee are left. Hook sits on a mushroom, feeling angry. «I hate Peter Pan,» he says. «He cut off my hand and fed it to the crocodile!»

Smee listens and nods. «But you’ve said the hook is better than a hand, Captain,» he reminds him.

Hook scowls. «That may be true, but the crocodile liked my hand so much it follows me everywhere. Luckily, it swallowed a clock, so I hear ticking before it comes.»

«What if the clock stops?» Smee asks.

Hook shivers. «That’s what I fear the most.»

Just then, smoke rises from the mushroom. Hook jumps up. «It’s a chimney!» he shouts.

The pirates realize the boys are hiding underground. Hook grins. «We’ll bake a big, sweet cake with green sugar and leave it by the mermaids’ lagoon. The boys will eat it and… they will die!»

Smee listened to Captain Hook’s plan with wide eyes.

«That’s the smartest and most wicked idea I’ve ever heard!» Smee said, clapping his hands. He began to sing. But before he could finish the song, a quiet sound stopped him.

At first, it was so soft it could have been a falling leaf. But then it grew louder.

«Tick, tick, tick, tick!»

Hook froze, his face pale. «The crocodile!» he whispered. He turned and ran as fast as he could, with Smee right behind him.

The crocodile slid through the trees, its jaws opening and closing, following Hook.

The lost boys came out of hiding, but soon, Nibs ran toward them.

«Help!» he cried. «Wolves are chasing me!» He fell to the ground, trembling.

The boys heard the wolves coming. Their howls were loud and scary.

«What can we do?» they asked.

Then they thought of Peter Pan. «Peter would look at them through his legs!»

«Yes, let’s do that!»

The boys bent down and looked at the wolves through their legs. It was such a strange sight that the wolves got scared. They dropped their tails and ran away.

Nibs stood up, staring at the sky.

«What is it?» Curly asked.

«I saw a big white bird,» Nibs said. «It’s flying this way, and it’s crying, „Poor Wendy! Poor Wendy!“»

«A bird?» Slightly said. «Maybe it’s a Wendy bird.»

«Look, there it is!» cried Curly.

Wendy was flying toward them, looking very tired. Her soft cries reached their ears. But they also heard another voice — it was Tinker Bell.

Tinker Bell flew around Wendy, pinching her and yelling.

«Hello, Tink!» the boys called.

Tink shouted, «Peter says to shoot the Wendy!»

The boys trusted Peter, so they believed Tinker Bell.

«Quick, grab bows and arrows!» they cried.

Tootles already had his bow. Tinker Bell pointed at Wendy and said, «Quick, Tootles! Peter will be happy!»

Tootles aimed his arrow at Wendy and fired. The arrow hit Wendy, and she fell to the ground.

What happens to the Neverland when Peter Pan is not there?

Why do the Lost Boys look through their legs at the wolves? What happens next?

What is Captain Hook’s biggest fear, and why?

How does Tinker Bell trick the Lost Boys, and what do they do because of it?

Why do the Lost Boys believe Tinker Bell when she says, «Peter says to shoot the Wendy,» and what happens because of this?
