Annotation. This work is presented as a first broad study interpreting the history of the Ulytau region — from its earliest inhabitants to the decline and collapse of the nomadic world.The author offers arguments that call into question the idea that the steppes of Kazakhstan were the «historical gateway of peoples,» where continuous migrations took place, and also raises issues of genealogical continuity among autochthonous clans.
