preface
The edition «GALA KLIMT. Digital art collection of pictorial poems» [synthecoder] is the product of an artistic experimental project in the field of neuroart and visual communications. Its content consists in the process interaction of advanced algorithms of artificial intelligence (AI) and humans in order to form a new, stylistic, linguistic, semantic — visual series. Ones arise as a result of neural calculations that creates many variations of new images during them. Emerging visual-plastic images forming in «digital sketches» of abstractions are becoming prototypes of paintings in the usual sense of the word.
For the realization of the GALA KLIMT edition, the artworks of the great Austrian artist of the Art Nouveau era, Gustav Klimt, was chosen. Which became a «landmark on the horizon of uncertainty of AI-generations» and helped to fit the creative processes of creating «a new» in concrete, stylistically recognizable images.
Artists and the text-to-image algorithm, working on the principle of “from text to image”, have interacted, experimented and created digital works. The resulting visual series was analyzed image-to-image by the artists, was classified according to the context based on their own experience, aesthetic preferences and moods. Over a four-month period, the authors of the synthecoder project created more than 10 thousand image files. As a result, the viewing and selection of images was performed, which were packed in a thematic, meaningful way in the format of this art book that you are currently considering — holding in your hands.
The composition of the edition is divided into sections, each of which is designated by a “Symbol” — a Word. As it was noted previously, the word set the meaningful vector of neural calculations, i.e., it was included in the text prompt for generation. Thus, the future visual image was formulated, regulated, directed and revealed, and the future visual image was enriched by “words”.
The many months of experience of AI-creators interaction experiments was dynamic, whopping and invaluable. This experience allowed to look at artistic creativity as a high-performance process, multidimensional, synthetic and synesthetic. And this process allows you to develop (independently) an artist who has his own face, and quickly feel the Creator inside you!
Of course, there are various methods of working with digital images, but the researchers had used the simple and accessible tool to create the generations, the adapted ruDALL-E model used semantics on Russian. In this case, they focused on experiments with the algorithm and the pictorial language of Gustav Klimt and as a result received his neo-follower.
The trained model allows you to orient yourself on the creative path of almost any modern artist and design a visual trajectory of his future development over a period of time incomparable in its duration with his creative career and life. Experiments with AI allow you to re-live an artist’s whole life in a few days, during which you create your own artistic language and design vectors of its development. A broad outlook and multimodal variability, ease of use and guided learning, fast processing speed and high performance of AI algorithms in creating images, coupled with «knowledge of the word» and the creative potential of a human artist, allows modern generative art to take a step into the future comparable to «spaceflight». The artist, in collaboration with AI, can rapidly designs a virtual world, creates his universe in digital, and then transforms it into a meta-form that manifests his creativity from a completely new side.
It is noticeable that art from the material form — the physical world of objects, moves and unpacks in the digital space. Throughout the history of art, there have been evolutionary leaps caused by discoveries in science — the creation of perspective, the invention of a tube for paints, the discovery of the law of optical color mixing, but their consequences were not as radical as the influence of AI on modern art.
The year 2022 should be considered the beginning of a new era when AI algorithms, generative adversarial networks and diffusion models can be totally used in any practical human activity, including creativity. This is a civilizational step towards «the man of the future».
