What can a hand on a country’s flag symbolize? The national flag and coat of arms of the Republic of Abkhazia were created based on sketches by artist Valery Gamgia, who reflected in the flag the symbol of Abkhaz statehood, known since the time of the Abkhazian Kingdom of the 8th–10th centuries. It is an open white palm on a red background, whose image developed over Sebastopolis — the predecessor of modern Sukhumi. Seven green-and-white stripes (four green and three white) symbolize tolerance toward Christianity and Islam.
